Before kayaking or swimming

1. Stay away from Jelly fish area!

You can easily avoid most jellyfish stings by being noticed about the risks and taking precautions on shore and in the water. When you're on a Halong Bay cruise, especially with Indochina Junk, there is a man/lifeguard of our staff always standing on the small boat to notice the guests staying away from jellyfish areas. You'd better listen to him to choose the right place to kayak or swim.

2. And remember, do not touch jellyfish that have washed ashore.

When they are washed ashore they look like a plastic bag or some strange thing. Even if the jellyfish is dead, its poisonous cells can still cause a sting! So if you are not sure whether or not it is a dead jellyfish, please do not touch it all. Especially with family traveling with children, they're always curious about everything on the shore.

3. Wear protective creams/lotions and wear wetsuit

Nowadays, there are many kinds of creams/lotions, which protect you both from the sunshine and even jellyfish in the water. Applying one of these lotions before you go in the water can be a good additional precaution.

Wear a wetsuit. A good wetsuit will keep you warm in the cold water and a perfect coverage from jellyfish swimming around. The thick material of a wetsuit will cover a large amount of your skin, makes it an effective preventative to jellyfish stings.

4. Leave the water immediately if you see or suspect a jellyfish.

Often, you can see jellyfish so easily in the water. They may look like a plastic bag or balloon floating at the surface of the water, and they may come in groups. If you see a jellyfish in the water, calmly but quickly return to shore to avoid stings. Then inform to the lifeguard immediately to have precautions to other swimmers.

If you have already been stung by a jellyfish, you'll need to treat the sting immediately. Here are some simple and humble steps to cure the stings at the moment:

1. Remove any pieces of jellyfish tentacle.

Then rinse the wound with seawater to avoid adding more sand on the stingers. Please don't rinse with fresh water or wipe the wound with a towel/cloth, as these actions could break the stinging cells and cause another sting.

You can also try gently scraping off the stingers with the dull edge of a knife or a butter knife, or just the edge of an ID card or a credit card. Make sure you don't use your bare hands

2. Rinse with vinegar or apply a baking soda paste

Using vinegar to treat a jellyfish sting is not just an old wives' tale. Rinse the wound with white vinegar for about 30 seconds. Or apply a paste of baking soda and seawater. Other alternatives include lemon juice, meat tenderizer, rubbing alcohol, or household ammonia.

3. Next, soak the area in hot water for at least 20 minutes if possible.

Icy packs can be used instead if the area can't be soaked in hot water. Just put ice in the cloth or a bag to do this, don't use bare ice to apply on the injury. Ice packs may help ease pain.

4. Take a pain reliever and apply dedicated lotions to help relieve itching and swelling.

If the pain is very severe or the victim's state get worse, go to the nearest medical centre as soon as possible.

If you follow the right steps, then there's no need to have these interesting creatures ruin your holiday in the stunning Bai Tu Long Bay, Vietnam.
